What to pack for Paris in the Spring

Petite Palais in Spring

Packing for Paris in the Spring!

Packing is not my favourite part of traveling.

Inevitably I pack all the wrong things. It's sunny and warm and I have loads of sweaters and jeans, or it's cold and I brought sandals and no coat.

I also just get tired of wearing the same thing. Your wardrobe is an extension of your personality and I jget tired of monotony. I hate seeing the pictures of my trip and realizing I wore the same thing over and over.

Enter the capsule packing system!
As I am sure you know, I didn’t invent this, but it's quite brilliant!
I have used it now on my last two trips and it really frees you up to create a wide variety of outfits from a reasonable amount of clothing!  The ability to mix and match is liberating and keeps things interesting without leaving you with the desire to leave all your vacation clothes at your destination and never wear them again.

WHAT’S A CAPSULE WARDROBE?

A capsule wardrobe is a limited selection of interchangeable clothing pieces that complement each other. These are often classic pieces that are primarily composed of neutral colors. This allows you to create a variety of different outfits with a small selection of clothes. The key to this staying interesting is choosing a color scheme.  Choose one main color to accentuate your outfits and go from there. This trip for me, I’m brining some blue clothing choices.

I have compiled a packing checklist for you. I will share it on my instagram page as well where you can screen shot it to use while packing.

I have also compiled examples of great pieces to bring on your spring travels, so read on below!

I. A Trenchcoat

No trip to Paris can happen with out a classic trench. This timeless piece is versatile, while looking polished. Not only is it a great transition piece between seasons, it compliments almost every outfit! This great trench is ON SALE at the Gap! Link below.

II. Button-up shirt (1-2)

Whether oversized or perfectly tailored, a crisp buttoned shirt is the ultimate in looking effortlessly chic, maintaining the balance between looking put together and laid back. Pack two of these, one in your color choice or two neutrals. They are great for layering in the unpredictable spring weather.

III. Casual Pants (1-2)

After your jeans, this piece will be fundamental to your capsule wardrobe. You want them to be comfy enough for wearing all day, and stylish enough to be able to wear out in the evening. I have been loving the Collette cropped wide legged pants by Maeve linked below! You will definitely see these on repeat on my trip!

IV. Boucle jacket

This piece is all the rage this spring. Wether in a neutral black or cream or you opt for a pop of color, this is fun jacket will keep you warm while looking stylish on your trip.

V. Jeans

This is a staple item and seen on every French woman in Paris. These jeans create the “effortlessly chic” look Parisiennes are well known for. Make sure they are comfortable and you will be able to dress them up or down!

VI. A Floral dress (or two)

Nothing is more Spring-like and romantic than a flowy floral dress. You will find this wardrobe staple being worn all over Paris.  This versatile piece of clothing effortlessly elevates your look while staying comfortable.

 VII. Sweater (bring 1-2)

Due to it’s practicality, the crewneck sweater is a Parisan staple and will give you that chic look while keeping your warm on those unpredictable spring days! Worn either over a dress or under a trench, it is a practical piece of layering and versatility, which is key for a trip to Paris in Spring.

VII. Neutral colored Blazer

The tailored blazer is one basic that French women wear all year long. For Spring it is the perfect piece of outerwear been worn on cool days as a jacket or layered under a trench. Choose a neutral color like navy, black or tan for ultimate versatility.

VIII. A Striped Top

"La marinière”, is probably one of the most classic pieces you can have when travelling to France. This cotton long-sleeved top with it’s horizontal blue and white stripe is a symbol of timeless French fashion. Wear it like a Parisienne by pairing it with jeans, a navy-blue blazer, and loafers or throw it over your shoulders with a classic black dress.

IX. Classic t-shirt (1-2) and a dressy blouse

A classic t-shirt is a necessity as part of your “Parisian uniform”. Pair it with jeans, loafers and a trench and you are good to go. It is an essential piece of layering especially for the unpredictable spring weather!

I have included this beautiful cross between a blouse and a t-shirt I found at Sezane. It is important to pack one blouse for dressier evenings or dinners out.

X. Shoes (3 pair)

Last but not least is your foot wear. It is essential that your shoes are comfortable (and stylish). A good pair of runners, one pair of sandals that can be dressed up or down, and then either loafers or ballet flats will complement your outfits and give you the variety you need for your trip.

C’est tout! Of course you will need a few more items to pack like a scarf, some great gold earrings, and any other small additions you love to bring on your travels. This packing list of classic french essentials will help you create a travel wardrobe full of versatile and classic looks.
