10 items every French woman
has in her wardrobe.

The key to obtaining a french wardrobe is a mastery of basics. French women balance between looking dressed up and laid-back at the same time. A French wardrobe is a collection of versatile, long-lasting pieces that stand the test of passing fads and seasons. It includes classics like white t-shirts, trench coats, blazers, ballet flats, loafers, striped sweaters and a timeless cross body bag.

French women's innate sense of style has long enchanted the rest of the world. They never look like they are trying too hard with their outfits or look like they spent hours getting ready. Parisian style is all about being effortlessly chic. The good news is, the 'French girl” style formula is a relatively simple one.  If you’re looking to bring some French style into your wardrobe, I’ve compiled a list of the French fashion essentials you will need.  These pieces listed below are classic, timeless, and can be worn all year round, regardless of age or season.

I. The Classic Trench

Nothing says French style more than the classic trench coat. It is, without a doubt, found in every French woman's wardrobe.  This timeless piece is versatile, while looking polished. Not only is it a great transition piece between seasons, it compliments almost every outfit!

II. Ballet flats

The ultimate chic and feminine look, the ballet flat is an essential piece of every “french girl” wardrobe. Again, they are versatile and go with a dress, jeans or trousers. They are ideal for walking the streets of Paris while looking tres chic!
Whether you add a pop of color and go for red, choose a shiny black patent or classic black leather, you will no doubt feel like a Parisienne with these in your wardrobe.

III. Button down shirt

Whether oversized or perfectly tailored, a crisp buttoned shirt will take you from the office to a night out. This is the ultimate in looking effortlessly chic, maintaining the balance between looking put together and laid back. For a casual daytime look, pair it with jeans, chic sneakers and the cross body tote.  Dress it up with a skirt, ankle boots and a great coat

IV. Little Black dress

The ultimate in versatility and classic Parisian style, the LBD needs to be a part of your French wardrobe. It is the dress that can be worn for a special occasion, to the office or for lunch with a friend.

A French women’s wardrobe is understated while still being sexy. The LBD therefore needs to be not too short or too tight, or too revealing.  You want to be able to throw it on and feel beautiful, confident and comfortable all day. It can pair with tights and heels, flats or boots.  Nothing is more French than a little black dress!

V. Straight leg jeans

This is a staple item and seen on every French woman in Paris. These jeans create the “effortlessly chic” look Parisiennes are well known for. The high waisted, straight leg jean is flattering to most body types and can be worn dressy or casual.

VI. Floral dress

Nothing is more romantic and chic than a flowy floral dress. You will find this wardrobe staple being worn all year long in Paris.  Wear it with tights and boots in winter or with sandals in the summer. This versatile piece of clothing effortlessly elevates your look while staying comfortable.

 VII. Cross body Bag

Despite it’s practicality,  the cross body tote has become an icon of Parisian style and functionality.  It can be worn all day comfortably all while looking chic and stylish. It is also a perfect way to add a pop of color or some contrast to your outfit.  There are numerous styles and price points, however this is one thing that I would recommend splurging a little on and purchasing a good quality leather bag that will last.

VII. Classic Blazer

The tailored blazer is one basic that French women wear all year long. In winter this is worn under a wool coat for layering and warmth.  It is a perfect piece of outerwear for Spring and Fall, and can even be worn on cool summer. Adding a blazer to any outfit will instantly elevate the look to help you feel more put together and chic. It can be worn with almost anything:  jeans and a t-shirt, your LBD, a skirt and blouse or even trousers for a completely suited look. Choose a neutral color like navy, black or tan for ultimate versatility. But don’t shy away from a pop of color like red to make a bold statement!

VIII. The Striped Top

"La marinière”, is probably one of the most classic pieces you can have in your French wardrobe. This cotton long-sleeved top with it’s horizontal blue and white stripe is a symbol of timeless French fashion. Wear it like a Parisienne by pairing it with jeans, a navy-blue blazer, and loafers.

9. Polished Loafers

Classic loafers are the ultimate basic that can elevate any look. These classic black leather shoes are a timeless mainstay in every French wardrobe.  The styles range from luxury brand platforms to traditional basic, black slip-on designs, high heel or sling back. No matter the style, you can wear them with any outfit. I am sure this is why French women love wearing loafers: these classics are super versatile and will never go out of style.

X. French girl Cardigan

The cardigan has been gaining popularity as a staple in Parisian wardrobes as of late, and for good reason!  It offers endless styling possibilities and adds to the versatility of the French wardrobe. Whether cashmere, wool or another mixture of knits, it is one way to stay warm while continuing to look chic!   Worn year round, either over a summer dress or under a trench in the spring and fall, it is a practical piece of layering and versatility, which is key for a French wardrobe!
